La Barquita Urban Redevelopment Project
2016
Santo Domingo Este
SUBSIDIZED HOUSING
La Barquita is a transformative urban redevelopment project located on the banks of the Ozama River in Santo Domingo Este. Developed in response to extreme flooding risk and precarious housing conditions, the project reimagines how vulnerable communities can be reintegrated into the urban fabric through ecological, social, and spatial resilience.
This new model neighborhood relocates over 1,800 families into safe, dignified housing within walking distance of services, employment, and public transportation. The plan includes a mix of residential blocks, commercial and public facilities, community spaces, and green infrastructure. Adjacent to the Ozama Wetlands National Park, the design prioritizes environmental stewardship with urban agriculture zones, shaded pedestrian corridors, and the restoration of riverfront ecosystems.
Through integrated planning and sensitive design, La Barquita proposes a replicable model for inclusive, climate-resilient urban development in Latin America.
